text layout on bigger console improvement

Reported by: yoshi3@autograf.pl Owned by: rakshasa
Priority: low Component: rtorrent
Version: Severity: normal
Keywords: framebuffer, console Cc:

Description

you know, some people use framebuffer devices to get more text on screen, or just to improve the refresh rate (on some computers standard consoles default to 60hz). the thing is - when console gets bigger, most programs take advantage of that, rtorrent does not. only the top and bottom information bar stretch to use the new screen width.

i personally use 1280x1024 resolution on my console, which allows me to get ~ 4 x more text on console (~2xbigger in both directions) with lat2-16 consolefont.

the columns in the file view in rtorrent could be better distributed on a bigger console, so there would be more space for filename column (some torrents contain subdirectories, and long filenames inside - finding that one file to prioritize is a real pain there, you know). or there might be some extra info in the unused free screen space.

i can give some example screenshots with brief descriptions to explain better. contact me if interested.

here is an example of framebuffer console with optional background.  http://img172.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img172&image=szot7wx.jpg

This is a very old entry but I made a patch for 132 column layout. You might grab at comment:ticket:58:9

Other people keep all their terminals at 80 columns for things such as mail and editing code.

This should be configurable per user.

Agreed. There are several views that can be seen by pressing numbers while in the top level. I have proposed a "compact" view as ticket #959. Obviously, the standard display will not cater to a super-wide terminal size, but there should easily be room for a "wide" view or the like.

Ticket 959 is a duplicate of ticket #303. Sorry about that.
